Having a TCM doctor as Grandfather, I have dreamed of studying TCM since very young. After finishing a bachelor's degree in UBC, My mind was set to following the family path but it was not clear to me which school would offer well-designed program. I had to spend time visiting some schools offering TCM program in Vancouver and when I came to Shang Hai TCM College, I met Dr. Sky along with my childhood friend from Korea. While I was talking to them, I found that my friend had already obtained the license to practice TCM in her age of 23 after finishing 10-semister program of this school and Dr. Sky is very devoted to offer the students the best TCM program. Furthermore, I found that this school is accredited by PCTIA, which meant I can get enough student loan for the program during my study; also, the program is suitable for two kinds of TCM license which gives me more options in my career. Now, in my 6th semester, I enjoy studying TCM more than I expected. The instuctors are all very kind, well prepared and so much experienced. They answer my questions not only from the resource but also from their experience. The small class size gives the students more intimate relationship from one another and lets them cooperate more during the program. Overall, I am glad I made the right choice and I cannot wait until I finsh the program and become a TCM practitioner. J. Tjen
. The choice for me is a simple and
easy one. The College employs knowledgeable
and experienced instructors. These
instructors have been practitioners of Chinese
medicine for many years; this enables
them to apply their own experiences to teaching. This offers the students valuable insights into the study of Chinese
medicine and its very practical application
in daily life. The close-knit environment
of the classrooms provides mutual assistance
and learning among the students and fosters
a natural desire of learning. I.

..I chose Shang Hai TCM College because
of a feeling I had when I first came to
the college. The college has relatively small
classes which promote and encourage student-teacher
relationships, which is conducive to learning
this subtle art. The college's teachers
are all wonderfully trained professionals,
passionate about their work and their commitment
in transmitting TCM teachings to their students.
With Dr. Sky Liu guiding students through clinic studies with
his experience, the college's main commitment
is to produce highly skilled practitioners
in the field of TCM, who are competent professionals
and an asset to their community. E.

..The benefit to attending Shang Hai TCM
College of BC is the focus on course content
and education of the students. This is seen
in the smaller class sizes, the excellent
teachers and family atmosphere which make
learning fun and easy. Also, with the expertise
of Dr. Sky Liu in acupuncture,
the school gives a deeper understanding
into its effects and treatment. The attention
and knowledge given by the teachers properly
prepare each student to not only pass the
board exams but also be competent practitioners.

I have a great interest in TCM, because
of the natural ways many illnesses and problems
can be treated. I believe TCM is a healthy
way of healing the body by the use of acupuncture
and natural herbs found here on the earth.
I am lucky to have known family members
who have encountered TCM, and have had many
of their problems solved with the use of
TCM. From minor aches and pains to great
life altering problems, I have seen many
people be restored back to health and in
many cases have their lives changed. These
amazing experiences have encouraged me to
become more and more interested in TCM.
As well as my interest in the human body
and in helping create health and well being
in people's lives, I saw that TCM was an
excellent choice of career for me. ..
I chose Shang Hai TCM College as my institute
of study, because of the first impression
I received upon arrival for a meeting with
Dr. Sky. As soon as I stepped in the office
I was welcomed with such warmth and cheerfulness
that I felt as though I had known everyone
there my whole life. By talking to Dr. Sky,
current students and teaching staff, I was
amazed at how much the school cared in my
education and helping me become a wise doctor
of TCM. The class sizes being small were
another point about the school that drew
me in. By the smaller class sizes I believed
I would benefit because of the unlimited
ability to ask questions and get the help
whenever I needed it.Finally, I believe
TCM is the perfect career choice for me
because of the endless opportunities I will
have in helping other people with physical,
mental and emotional troubles. I also know
that Shanghai College will help me achieving
my goals and encourage me to become the
finest doctor of TCM that I am able to be.

My journey to become a Doctor of
Traditional Chinese Medicine began at the
Tzu Chi Institute for Complementary and
Alternative Medicine in April 2000. As assistant
to the clinic manager, executive director
and medical director, I was exposed to a
variety of modalities of alternative healing
some of which included; Chiropractic, Massage,
Naturopathy, Nutrition, Acupuncture, Herbology,
Mind-Body medicine, Yoga, Art Therapy, Rieki,
and a General Practitioner (MD) who practiced
alternatively. I am very thankful for the
time that I spent at the Tzu Chi Institute;
it was an eye opening time of education
and great curiosity about the world of alternative
medicine. I was pleased to learn that the
mode of healing (alternative healing) my
family and myself have believed in all our
lives did indeed help to heal. During my
time at the Tzu Chi Institute it was the
Acupuncture and Herbology (TCM) that fascinated
me the most. Exploring one's illness in
relation to the mind, body and spirit while
not focusing on the "disease" and treating
just the symptoms made complete sense. The
emphasis on energy and creation of harmony
within the body is the most holistic way
to heal anyone (and everyone). V. Takhar

When I was younger, I was a track and
field athlete. At that time, I had the experience
to see many athletes who were injured during
the training. However, strangely most of
the coaching staff took them to the TCM
doctors rather than western doctors. Moreover,
my friends were easily cured with several
needles. So naturally I had much curiosity
about acupuncture and was mesmerized with
those kinds of miracle hands dreaming I
would be the doctor. But as time went by,
I was pursuing a so-called successful career
in the financial field regardless of my
aptitude. I used to imagine the path
I didn't take. Whenever I felt the situation
surrounding me was not satisfying, my childhood
dream was on my mind. In the long run, I
determined to quit the money job to make
my TCM doctor dreams come true. K.

Shang
Hai TCM College of BC is the first accredited TCM school of
BC in Canada. It has a long history and a great teaching staff.
Many students who have graduated from the school have a good
business and help many patients using their TCM skills. So
I am sure I can study here, there are many TCM techniques
and knowledge about how to be a good TCM practitioner. I think
the teachers of the school will give me the best teaching
and introducing and help me to grasp enough skills to be a
good TCM practitioner. So I choose Shang Hai TCM College of
BC as the place where I study TCM.

For many years I struggled with the issue
of determining what I wanted to do with
my life. It very much amuses me that for
all of these years, the answer was right
in front of my face. My father is a TCM
practitioner and until recently, I never
really paid much attention to what he did
for a living. Now, after much research and
thought, it seems that all of my experiences
and interests are directing me into the
field of Traditional Chinese Medicine. .../However,
after making such a life changing decision,
I was now faced with selecting a school.
Many circumstances contributed to my selection
of Shang Hai TCM College as a training facility,
yet the single deciding factor for me was
the warmth and individual attention that
I felt as soon as I walked through the door.
Initially, I traveled to Shang Hai TCM College
expecting to pick up a general catalog for
more information. You can imagine my surprise
when I was able to sit down with the Dean
of Students for my entry interview that
day! Dr. Sky Liu explained to me in a most
humbling manner, that the students at Shang
Hai TCM College were like his family. He
noted that he had been involved with many
businesses in the past, and that he was
not running this facility for the money.
His true intentions were to educate a new
generation of exceptional doctors in the
ways of TCM. He was most certainly genuine
and has continued to be so to this day. B. Chang

I have three motivations to study Traditional
Chinese Medicine that I have been interested
in since I was young. First of all, as a
matter of fact, I believe that Traditional
Chinese Medicine is very effective in regenerating
organic function and treating chronic diseases.
My interest in "Traditional Chinese Medicines"
increased as a direct result of witnessing
Western Medicine's inability to manage
diseases of a chronic and systemic nature,
such as gastrointestinal cancer, that ultimately
ended the life of my close relative when
I was young, and seeing that my cousin who
had injuries by a car accident 5 years ago
would not be cured completely even after
3 time surgeries, but he was cured fully
enough by Traditional Chinese Medicine Treatments.
Second, it is the fact that Traditional
Chinese Medicine has achieved immense fame
both at home and abroad, and that more and
more people have more interests in the magical
effects of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Finally, my father who had a thorough knowledge
of Western Medicine as well as was a headmaster
of elementary school always wanted me to
study Traditional Chinese Medicine while
he put great emphasis on that TCM offered
many advantages and could be used safely
on its own or as an alternative or complementary
medicine. But I see now what he meant. He
told me a lot then such as information in
the area of alternative and complementary
medicine, to include acupuncture, homeopathy
and the use of herbs and integrating traditional
and modern acupuncture with Western Medical
Practice, creating a comprehensive approach.

I want to study Traditional Chinese Medicine
and Acupuncture because I want to know human
body, disease and treatment for it. My health
is not well and my biggest problem is a
back pain. I have had this pain since five
years ago just after my first baby was born,
and it was worse after my second baby was
born. I tried to take acupuncture and herbal
tea many times and these were effective
for me. So I became to be interested in
the TCM and I wanted to study it. When I
had some health problems, I went to see
my family doctor. Sometimes, I took tests
and medications. After treatments my acute
diseases were better but, the other problems
- got tired easily, back pain etc. - were
not better. So I tried to take acupuncture
and herbal tea and I was getting better.
I think I need both the western medicine
and Chinese medicine now. Here in Shang
Hai TCM College, I want to study TCM with
western medicine. The western medicine will
give me the basic medical knowledge and
I expect to learn a lot along with TCM.
S.Y. Kim

Since then I've been interested in TCM
and I have tried to understand how it can
work. I learned Korean hand & foot acupuncture
and acupressure. Besides, I studied other
traditional physiotherapy by myself through
books. While I was studying those therapies,
I realized that there is an infinite potential
of self-cure system in human body as well
as more effective treatment if I use more
than one of therapies properly. Also, I've
been feeling there's more to it than that
I know. This is why I want to study in Shang
Hai TCM College. Furthermore, it could open
marvelous possibility of medical treatment
nobody could imagine so far if western medicine
is combined with oriental medicine. If western
medicine is complemented with TCM, we can
expect to jump on the higher healing therapy
for the human body. Anyone who works in
healthcare field should make it a rule to
respect human dignity. To cure disease is
holy work. No matter whom they are, regardless
of race, religion, skin color and political
issue should be treated with same respect
as the "Hippocratic oath". To share patients'
pain and understand them is important as
well, besides, one should keep studying
against new diseases. S.T. Chung
I believe that the practice of TCM will
grow and continue to grow, especially when
colleges like Shang Hai TCM College and
Clinic produce quality practitoners of western
world descent.I chose this school over the
other schools because of the smaller class
sizes. The smaller classes allow for classroom
discussion and a personalized approach to
instruction and learning. The college offers
a unique blend of Eastern history, culture
and expertise into a North American environment.
I found the faculty to be very knowledgeable
and very willing to bring a balance between
text book theories and clinical experience
together to make my learning experience
unforgettable. I especially found the in-house
clinical experiences very helpful and insightful.
Dr. Sky brought acupuncture
alive for me and I will bring those experiences
with me into my practice. I believe that
the faculty truly work hard and have my
best interests at heart. ..I have had a
positive experience since attending this
college and have made lasting friendships
and possible future partnerships. D. Hill
